Armstrong Flooring, Inc. (AFI) has an opportunity for a Cost Accounting Manager to be located at our corporate campus in Lancaster, PA. As a member of our Operational Accounting team, the Manager, Cost Accounting is responsible for providing accounting oversight and guidance for all North American cost of goods sold related transactional accounting activities including manufactured and sourced products. Key categories include general accounting, standard finance reporting, support of budgeting & forecasting data collection, inventory valuation, compliance & internal control, and the monthly general ledger accounting close.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Effectively utilize appropriate ERP system and miscellaneous software to drive process efficiencies, lower service delivery cost, and increase effectiveness

  • Drive effective utilization of internal and offshore resources by Americas manufacturing locations

  • Provide accounting oversight and guidance for all North American cost of goods sold related transactional accounting activities includes, but is not limited to, performance and/or oversight of:

  1. Preparation of actionable reporting and analysis to support the company’s financial closings and internal/external reporting processes and ensure the reliability of reported results

  2. Communication with colleagues at various manufacturing locations or corporate departments to resolve issues and closing discrepancies, including root cause analysis and updating of all supporting documentation (desktop procedures, workflows, checklists, policies, internal controls, etc.)

  3. Standardization of unique business processes

  4. General ledger and inventory accounting for NA locations, including calculation of LCM, FIFO, PEOI, and LIFO reserves

  5. Inventory control and reconciliation for third party logistics warehouse, including reviewing and auditing adherence to physical count procedures

  6. Accounting closing activities with a special focus on cost of goods sold, including reconciliation of general ledger and sub ledger accounts

  7. SAP entry and maintenance of applicable product costing master data including standard costs, bill of materials and routings necessary for product cost and shop floor controls

  8. Forecasting and budgeting responsibilities for all sourced products to include reporting and analyzing variance to budget and forecast for product/procurement managers

  9. Accounting activities performed by offshore associates for US manufacturing locations and sourced products

  10. SOX compliance and audit reviews

  11. Coordination with internal and external auditors

  12. Performance of all activities in a timely, relevant, and accurate manner to meet internal customer expectations

  13. Confirm and abide by all regulatory guidance and internal policies and procedures

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Directly responsible for two accounting specialists with responsibility for manufactured and sourced product costing


  • Occasional travel for inventory audits, plant site visits, conferences, vendor meetings or similar activities may be required (<10%)

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or related function

  • Seven years of related experience in various financial roles, with three years manufacturing accounting experience in a standard cost environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • SAP and/or Hyperion Enterprise experience preferred

  • CMA preferred

  • Plant controller or similar experience

  • Lean Six Sigma or similar continuous improvement experience

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage well through tight deadlines and complexity

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Good organization and process management skills

  • Excellent written & oral communication skills
