Manufacturing Project Engineer’s provide engineering and technical support to the manufacturing operations and act as project managers for new product launch by defining and commissioning of capital projects, identifying and execute process improvement and cost reduction initiatives. You will also work with a team in equipment standards development, root cause analysis, packaging and labeling projects, and the integration of process improvement methodologies throughout the organization.

As a member of a cross disciplinary team, you will participate in or lead projects including problem investigation, project requirements gathering, developing solutions, writing scope documents, specifying equipment, preparing appropriation requests and working on all phases of project and equipment installations. In addition, this position plays a critical role in our Lean efforts as we continuously strive to improve our processes and reduce waste. In our fast-paced and dynamic manufacturing environments, you will take on and execute projects and studies of significant importance, scope, and complexity. Travel to our plants throughout the U.S. is required, and will vary from single day to multiple week trips.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Executing capital projects, ensuring cost, schedule, and performance goals are met or exceeded. This may vary from owning portions of a large project to sole ownership of a project

  • Ownership of project justification, completing payback analysis, and authoring requests for capital funds

  • Developing preliminary concepts and budgetary capital estimates for new products, projects, and improvements

  • Assisting in and / or developing vendor bid packages and final vendor selection for purchased parts and services in collaboration with procurement team

  • Periodically providing status updates on project progress and issues

  • Investigating manufacturing problems in the plants and recommending corrective actions. This includes consulting with production personnel, analyzing the supporting data, recommending corrective actions, and following through on recommendations to evaluate their effectiveness

  • Drives achievement of the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of assigned projects

  • Coordinating training and start-up activities of new equipment and processes

  • Participating in Lean efforts, such as Kaizen events, where an emphasis is placed on creativity before capital investment

  • Replacing/adding production capabilities by adding or modifying equipment

  • Establishing equipment SOP's and maintenance practices to place assets in a precision state

  • Modifying equipment and processes to automate manual tasks to improve capacity and/or reduce cost

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related discipline

  • Basic understanding of engineering principals - knowledge of engineering disciplines: Process, Packaging, Electrical, Mechanical, Automation or Chemical

  • 1-3 years of project management experience

  • Approximately 50-60% average travel requirement depending on project demands

  • Able to work collaboratively with other functional groups

  • Understanding of Lean Principles

  • Excellent communication and team skills (verbal, written and presentation)

  • Ability to take ownership of projects, to work independently and make autonomous decisions when necessary

  • Understanding design for reliability

Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • Previous experience with the application of Six Sigma and/or Lean Manufacturing methodologies

  • Experience with AutoCAD and PLC Programming is desirable

  • PMP certification

  • Engineering-related internship, research experience or work experience in an industrial environment or manufacturing facility is highly desirable

  • Understanding of Business – financial justification of projects

  • Analytical skills – data visualization and decision making

  • Ability to read engineering drawing

  • FMEA exposure
