Conservation Legacy Community Volunteer Ambassador – San Juan National Historic Site in San Juan, Puerto Rico

Position Details:

Stewards Individual Placements, a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train a diverse group of emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities.

CVA will be working hand to hand with volunteer coordinator to improve the administrative aspects of the VIP program in SAJU. CVA will work with volunteer coordinator to create a community reaching plan that will attract diverse volunteer candidates from nearby underrepresented communities.

Site Description

San Juan National Historic Site is the only National Park Unit in Puerto Rico. It is comprised by the old Spanish fortifications of Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Castillo San Cristóbal, San Juan Gate, Fort San Juan de la Cruz and most of the city walls. The park was founded in 1949 and it was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1983.

Position Responsibilities:

· Develop recruitment strategies.

· Coordinate meetings with community leaders to promote park VIP program and recruitment strategies.

· Serve as advisor for volunteers.

· Help with the coordination and development of VIP activities.

· Attend CVA and Volunteer meetings (virtual or person)

· Develop and keep volunteer program inventories.

· Serve as program liaison between the park and nearby institutions, as well with private and non-profit organizations.

· Develop written materials such as handbooks, park policies, event flyers and other recruitment documentation.

CVA Minimum Requirements:

· Preferably a graduate student from the following fields: education, tourism, history, anthropology or sociology.

· Fully bilingual: fluent in Spanish and English.

· Available to work during weekends and in after-hours events.

· Responsible.

· Participate in the CVA National Early Service Training in late November 2024 (date TBD)

· Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.

· Be 18-30 years old at time of service (veterans up to 35 years old)

· High School Diploma/GED

· Pass fingerprint-based FBI, state criminal, and a national sex offender checks.

· Be able to provide proof of a driver’s license and complete a MVR check

• Must be over 21 years old or have had license for at least 3 years to be insured in this position

Preferred Qualifications:

· Local applicants are preferred.

· Effective communication skills in English and Spanish, both verbal and written.

· Experience engaging general public.

· Experience engaging underrepresented communities.

· Proficiency in communication technology (apps and computer programs).

· Basic knowledge of Puerto Rican underrepresented communities and their social situations.

Additional Information:

· Working schedule includes weekends and occasional afterhours events.

· Park does not have available housing.

· Parking is available.

· Participant will be able to collaborate with other federal and local agencies. Including Virgin Islands National Parks.

Benefits:
  • $600/week living stipend.

  • $150/week in housing allowance, if housing is not provided.

  • The position is eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award of $6,895.00 (pre-tax) upon successful completion of the program

  • Week-long in-person training at NPS site with travel/meal expenses covered.

The CVA position will start on Monday, September 9, 2024, and run for 48 weeks until Friday, August 8, 2025.
