Pacific Lutheran University Human Resources Specialist in Tacoma, Washington

Work Schedule:

Full-time; Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm.

General Description:

As a Human Resources Specialist you'll collaborate with the HR team to advance Pacific Lutheran University (

PLU) programs and processes. In continuing our commitment to hiring and developing a talented and diverse workforce, one of your main areas of responsibility will be employment and onboarding. You'll have the opportunity to work with hiring managers across campus to ensure searches are conducted in an equitable and timely manner and new employees are welcomed and supported as they begin their time at 

PLU. You'll also process a high volume of part-time teaching and service agreements. This position will support the University's Title IX program by coordinating training. Additionally, you'll help foster outreach and communication to the 

PLU community by assisting your HR team with events, workshops, production of written communications and maintenance of the department websites. Reports to the Director of Human Resources.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the staff employment process including the development of job postings, placement of position advertising, application review, and assisting internal users/applicants of the online employment system.
  • Maintain communication with hiring managers/supervisors throughout the hiring process.
  • Calculate and enter part-time teaching and service agreements in Banner on a monthly basis in alignment with the Payroll schedule; audit entries on a monthly basis.
  • Onboard new staff. Coordinate pre-employment requirements including background checks, driving abstracts, education verification, and reference checks for the declaration of sexual misconduct; prepare offer letters.
  • Planning and coordination of events and/or workshops.
  • Manage enrollment and record completion of Title IX and other mandatory training modules through Vector on a monthly basis. Coordinate training offerings.
  • Support benefit and leave administration through tasks such as tracking, entry, and communications.
  • Participate in departmental staff meetings and attend other meetings and trainings as needed.
  • Produce communications for advertising and events including brochures, resource materials, emails, etc.
  • Provide support for the student employment process as needed.
  • Explore new recruitment opportunities in order to enhance applicant pools.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in an environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills. Ability to prioritize work to provide prompt and efficient support.
  • Ability to adapt quickly in a fast paced work environment.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and ability to learn new software applications.

Required Qualifications:

  • 3 years of human resources, customer service, or other job-related experience. Education may substitute for some experience.
  • High school diploma or  GED.
  • Finalist applicants must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background check and declaration regarding sexual misconduct with references, subject to verification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with and/or experience in higher education.
  • Coursework or previous experience in Human Resources.
